The British Isles include Great Britain, Ireland and many smoller
islands. Great Britain and Northern Ireland form the United Kingdom which consist
of England (capital London), Scotland (capital Edinburgh), Wales (capital Cardiff)
and Northern Ireland (capital Belfast).Southern Ireland is an indipendent Republic
called Eire (capital Dublin).
London is also the capital of the United Kingdom. The United Kingdom has an
area of 244,110 sq km with a population of about 58 milion people. Most people
live in the big urban areas between London and Manchester. In the South –
west of England, in Scotland and in Wales, you can also find small villages
and quiet places.
In the United Kingdom people speak English, but Scotland, Wales and Ireland
also have their traditional languages (Scottish, Welsh and Irish). They are
of Celtic origin and are very different from English. Sometimes they have a
very difficult pronuciation.
The U.K. is a constitutional monarchy. The sovereign is the Head of state but
the Prime Minister and an sovereign is Queen Elizabet II, who lives in Buckingham
Palace, in London. The Prime Minister alwais lives at 10, Dowing Street. The
national flag is called the Union Jack.

comanda. L’attuale sovrano è la Regina Elisabetta II, che vive
nel Buckingham Palace, in London. Il Primo Ministro sempre vive nella Dowing
Street numero 10. La bandiera nazionale è chiamata la Union Jack.
